I'm really please with how the colours worked out in this one.
 |
On the left there are chicken fingers, a two-bit strawberry coffee cake and a couple of tomatoes as filler. On the right there is a salad made of wild rice and peaches, sugar snap peas and blueberries. |

9:17a Pita lunch

Child has cheese & ham in pita, with yellow pepper, cucumber and carrot sticks and cream cheese in the bear for dipping. Pineapple on the side and carrot, apple & raspberry juice to drink. I think he's getting a lot less picky, because that's not something I'd have got past him a month or two ago, and today he approved everything again, hurray!
Baby and I have very similar, so I've not pictured it; we have fresh fruit, and baby has cream cheese and grated carrot in her pita, and steamed broccoli instead of veg sticks. Oh, and we have yoghurts (normal for me, baby for her), and she only drinks water (and milk).

12:29a inappropriate slash thoughts
WTF. Torchwood. Where's the Doctor? Jack's clearly NOT GOOD ENOUGH, especially with planning or being capable of doing without the planning. Frobisher's getting a lot of screen time with his red-rimmed eyes....Too much, you could almost say. I do like that Jack doesn't say "I'm sorry" though. I'm so tense I'm not sure if I have enough will power to go through tomorrow in order to watch it at night, rather than afternoon....o, the anticipation....
Unrelated, several YouTube vids from HBO's John Adams series just made me very very fond of Jefferson. My Hamilton allegiance is thus compromised. But Rufus Sewell as Hamilton? Clearly, they didn't make an effort at physical-likeness-to-portrait where he's concerned whereas Jefferson is...ridiculously charming? Still, it's Rufus Sewell!Hamilton, so thank goodness for the internet, because my inappropriate slash thoughts of Hamilton/Jefferson is nicely indulged. Inappropriate because Hamilton/Laurens or even Adams/Jefferson is of course more canonical...
And I think, the BBC Radio Sherlock Holmes had a scene in The Devil's Root where Holmes and Watson declared love for each other via Wagner.

1:50a Writer's Block: My Ideal Life Ten Years from Now…
I have a job writing patents for a company that makes fusion reactors (which are in production for & being used by energy companies) and/or algae-diesel (ditto on the production part), my spouse is working in biomedical and/or for the federal government, we own at least one Siamese cat, and all our student loans are totally paid off.

10:32p Ugh
After a day wherein I 1) am short on sleep, 2) am PMSing, 3) need to sort out school-related stuff, 4) don't get anything significant accomplished at work, 5) find that my cellphone has sustained some minor (but still irritating) damage, 6) get a double dose of crazy street ladies and 7) have to wait half an hour for the bus out of the Walnut Creek BART, I am feeling decidedly beat-up and put-upon. :(
(I wish retail therapy were an option, but it already came before all of this - last Tuesday I watched The Proposal and hit Jo-Ann's and Bay Books.)
However, I am of course trying to shake it off. Many of these things are small annoyances and I should not sweat the small stuff. Further, I have done what I could about the things that I could do something about, and must not trouble myself about the things beyond my control. Finally, I am safe at home and clean and fed.
Also, this day has not been completely rotten. On the bright side, my boss at work complimented me on the article I had drafted. I like being told (truthfully) that I'm doing a good job, and the people at work are really good about that sort of thing. :) Also, I had happy hour drinks at the Gold Dust Lounge with a friend from school - alcohol on an empty stomach is never a good idea, but the buzz was fun. And it's Friday tomorrow...and I'm seeing chrysantza, scieppan and tapestrymlp next week! ^_^ (Don't worry, I've got the date, time and place all straight now, LOL!)
I also received an email just now from a former co-worker who also used to work for my Tita Marie when she was still alive and at NEDA. She sends religious stuff, but it's uplifting rather than preachy, and her messages seem to come at times when I need them most :) I guess I'll go read this latest email now, then go to bed.
I hope everything starts looking up in the morning.

3:05p YEAH YOU KNOW THIS IS WHY YOU READ MY JOURNAL
Adam Lambert on Velvet Goldmine (from here):
I don’t know how I found Velvet Goldmine, but once I saw it, I was obsessed with it. I thought it was a genius movie, both in plot and also, visually and musically. In all elements it was just really cool.
27-year-old glam kids repreZENT. It makes me so happy he loves this movie. It had a really profound impact on me in so many ways when I saw it as a teen, and is one of the big generational touch-stones for me that hasn't yet been covered by Lyn-Z, Pete Wentz, and all the other band people whose formative interests partially align with my own.
Adam's dad about what Adam thought of Star Trek (from here):
Adam (like his Mom) was not really into it. Except he always dug the cool alien make-up.
... OF COURSE HE DID.

9:14p I Lied!
Not about my upcoming weekend of LJ-silence, but about the amount of posting I'd be able to do before I went silent. A relatively quiet work day allowed me more free time this evening than I'd expected to have. Accordingly (since Naltraiel begged me so nicely - who can resist puppydog eyes?), I went ahead and posted all the remaining chapters of "Swan Song" at the usual places: ithilwen_fics, my Dreamwidth fic journal, and the Silmarillion Writers' Guild Archive. Now in the extremely unlikely event a truck wipes me out on the interstate, you'll at least know what happens to Maglor.
(I am so not a WIP person at heart. Too bad; it would have been fun to draw out the suspense!)

10:05p Bento #35
I took a break for a couple of days. I just didn't feel like making a good bento. I am proud that I have been using my reusable sandwich box for PB&Js and a side box for my pretzels. I am excited about this for tomorrow though. It should be a pretty good time.

Left: pasta with a red sauce Right: applesauce, mixed greens, cucumber flowers and raspberry vinaigrette

3:42p Korean potato salad and gyoza bento
(click for larger image) Korean-style potato salad, cherry tomatoes, 2 gyoza, gyoza sauce in Hello Kitty.
This is called Korean-style potato salad because it is a poor substitute for Sorabol's potato salad. Sorabol is a Korean restaurant in town that my best friend and I frequent for lengthy girlie conversation. They bring out about 8 (free!) side dishes with every order. It's always random, so I'm always hoping that this potato salad is on the menu for the day.
Korean-style potato salad 2 potatoes, cooked (I cut mine up into cubes and microwave for 6 minutes) 1/4 block kamaboko, minced 1/4 cucumber, minced mayo, to taste salt and pepper, to taste
Mash potatoes until it resembles lumpy mashed potatoes. Mix in other ingredients. Chill and serve.

11:14a All you need is love (and cages)
The comments on this post are pretty much the most joyful, pleasing things I've seen in months -- so much cheery and good-natured reveling in one another's specific and cliched kinks, with no self-deprecation or self-consciousness. This is why I love fandom so very very much.
It also makes me feel much better about the Wolf House books, I have to admit, because oh right, there actually is an audience out there for stories about smart, snarky hot people who have secret pain because of their pasts where they were kept in vampire slave-houses but now they spend most of their time going to punk shows/hunting vampires/being in love with vampires/having more secret pain. WHEEE. COME ON, YOU KNOW YOU'LL READ IT. right?

7:04p Aisai Bento
My husband has fallen in love with sushi. (This was the same man who didn't eat SALADS when we first married, but I digress). Anyway, he's gotten nuts for the stuff.
Tomorrow is his birthday, so of course I had to learn to make sushi for him for his bento. This is smoked salmon and cucumber.
Friends, if you're considering learning to make sushi, go for it. It's not really difficult to make. No, this doesn't look as neat as a sushi chef would do it (my first attempt, after all). If you make sure you make the rice well-rinsed before cooking and cooled down to room temperature, be careful not to spread it too thick, roll carefully, then roll it again to seal, and use a wet knife to cut the pieces, you're all good.
