And in Other News
One of the outdoor kitties, S'mores, got into a fight with his brother last Friday and got a nasty bite wound to the chest that needed a trip to the vet, stitches, a drain, an injection of antibiotic, and a "buster collar" to keep him from pulling out said stitches. Needless to say he has been an indoor kitty for almost a week now, and once he recovers, I'll be looking for a new home for him where he can live indoors away from his brother. The two of them just don't seem to be able to share the outside territory without constant spats. And while S'mores may start the fights, he doesn't seem to win them. Or learn from the experience. Brother Sable got some scrapes, but he definitely came out ahead of S'mores. -__- What is weird is that he's getting along OK with my cats, it just seems he can't stand his brother. It figures. So... anybody want a gorgeous snowshoe cat with a lovely people-oriented personality? :) click for kitty-pic

And in other news, I got home tired, laid down for a nap, and was awakened by my across the street neighbor ringing the doorbell. I opened the door and saw a whole bunch of police cars clustered around my next-door neighbor's house. What the heck? It turns out a pair of young men were fleeing from the city police, at speeds around 100 mph (according to the policeman who filled us in), tried to turn the corner onto our street and didn't quite make it. He sailed over my neighbor's lawn, through/under the chain-link fence, and crashed into their garage. Just like something out of a movie. If you look at the photos below, you can see a taillight shining in the garage. Unfortunately he did not drive in the entrance of the garage, but made a new one through the garage wall. My neighbors are fortunate that the idiots didn't end up in their living room or in their backyard pool. And the garage didn't collapse on them. Amazingly enough the two men inside walked/limped away from the crash, to be collected by the police a few minutes later. I'm not sure what exactly they had done to be trying to flee from the cops through a residential area at such high speeds, but I doubt it was anything intelligent.

The view from my front door. As you can see, the front yards are not terribly big, so the guys in the car cut the corner badly and pretty much flew into the neighbor's garage. They are lucky to be alive. At least we ended up having a nice neighborhood get-together with everyone, hanging out, watching, and chatting for about an hour.

It's been an interesting week. :)

"Interesting" like that, we don't need. Similar chase past my house a few years ago, except that the original driver of the vehicle had already been shot dead by the police and his passenger was doing the steering...such times we live in.

Hope you can find good homes for both the boys, and glad to see progress apace on the house addition!

Ugh, at least we didn't have any deaths. There are places in this corner of the state where some things like that do happen. *sigh* Exciting times indeed. -__-

Now that's exciting! I'm glad the idiots chose the neighbor's unoccupied garage rather than your house! My condolences to your neighbors for the repairs they'll have to make.

We've had a similar incident in my neighborhood, a few streets up. Apparently a drug deal went bad inside an SUV while said SUV was still moving. The passenger shot the driver and the SUV crashed into a house.

Interesting... S'Mores looks very much like my old cat, Ichi. Ichi didn't have blue eyes, but he had a long Siamese-type face and the typical Siamese voice. And he was a fighter with a real attitude who wound up at the emergency vet twice for mishaps. Good luck in finding him a new home.

I'm very grateful they didn't hit anything super-vital, although getting the garage fixed will probably involve insurance company paperwork and similar bureaucratic hassles.

Driver-less vehicles are a big worry - they're basically self-powered engines of destruction. I hope no one was hurt in the incident you describe.

The snowshoe cats are an interesting blend of domestic shorthair and Siamese traits. Wikipedia describes them as "rare", but I've worked with three in the feral litter I tamed, and there are at least 2 more out there, probably with the same sire as S'mores and Sable. All tomcats/males interestingly enough.

Maaan... "May you live in interesting times" is an ancient Chinese curse... and it seems you are! So lucky that those idiots didn't wipe out your neighbours' house.

I'd offer to adopt one of the boys, but unfortunately NZ is a bit far away. :(

It is *usually* a quiet neighborhood, but somehow we got our dose of excitement Friday evening. Yeesh. Mom clipped out the newspaper report on Saturday for me. Turns out the driver had been flagged down by the police on the other side of town for having an "obscured windshield". The driver fled through town at speeds exceeding 70 mph, and when he turned into the residential neighborhood the police quit actively chasing for fear of causing innocent casualties. The driver didn't notice and ended up in my neighbor's garage. Turns out he fled because he had a suspended license (gee, wonder why?). So now he has two more counts on his rap sheet, including "felony fleeing". He's 25 years old, old enough not to be a hormonal teen, so I have to wonder what's going on. They tend to yank the driver's license for drink-driving offenses, among other things, so if it turns out he was drunk, he's in even worse trouble.

the chase thing sounded scary, its one thing I still get freaked out about living where I am. I live in the downtown area near the low income housing and refuse to go out alone when its getting dark. I had to do a quick conversion from miles to kilometres (100 mph= 160kph)and my eyes widened. I wish they would yank the licences of drunk drivers here, it would be so much better for the rest of us.

Chases with cars are very scary -- they are 2 tons of destruction when the driver loses control. :( We're very lucky no one was hurt. Yep, 160 kph - too darn fast for any road except Formula One tracks.

They yank licenses here, but sometimes a little too slowly. Usually they do it after 2-3 offenses, and that means a higher risk of the guilty party causing a fatal accident. In Sweden and Norway you get caught driving drunk and you go to jail for a couple years. On the first offense! They still have parties, but the host provides cab service for everyone, no argument allowed. I rather like that policy.

Yeeps! Good thing nobody was killed!

A friend had some idiot being chased by the cops drive into the driveway loop of his apartment's parking area, only to wipe his transmission out on a speed bump and come to an abrupt halt. Or, as the rest of us have been saying ever since, the only time in history anybody was ever arrested by a "Sleeping Policeman". (I believe this delightful term for a speed bump comes from Jamaica or somesuch place.)

My neighbors were lucky they didn't get run down by this guy. -__-

ROFL, I love the descriptive phrase for a speed bump!! We've got rather lumpy areas where the storm gutters crisscross the roads and that may have acted like a virtual speed bump in this case.

The guys in the car are very lucky that they didn't win a "Darwin Award" for this escapade. Maybe they'll learn from the experience and straighten up?

That was scary! That 25 year-old was a complete twit!

Please give S'Mores my sympathy (nice pedicure you have, BTW).

I'm glad that the walls are looking nice in the addition.

Ed replaced the doorbell, so the only casualties still to be replaced are my VCR and the garage-door opener.

I have another interview tomorrow -- fingers crossed! (Yes, I'm praying!!)

Turns out the guy was 23, had a suspended license, and had "borrowed" his wife's car for his little joyride. He's in deep doo-doo. And he's really lucky to be alive. Turns out he went through two chain-link fences (the dog run), and plowed into a 500-lb barbell set in the garage. They found the car's license plate lying beside the pool some distance away.

My neighbor is having my contractor over to give him an estimate on rebuilding/repairing the garage. He's got the same insurance company I've got, and they are very good, so hopefully all will turn out OK.

Yay, on getting things repaired! :)

Good luck, good luck! <3

Well, they don't think I'd be a good fit for their team. (I was eligible for 2 positions. The only reason I agreed to be interviewed for this one was that I'd be starting Monday and the other one wouldn't be starting until September 8th. I asked to be considered for the other job. There are some weekend hours, but it pays $2.00 an hour more than the first job.)

How goeth things? Fence-building here, complete with post hole digger and fresh lumber, to enclose the back yard for a proper kitty-gulag. If I can figure how to keep Blitz from just jumping over the fence...
