Coming Soon - Framing
Got a call midweek from my contractor saying the lumber for the framing would start to show up Monday or so and that the roof trusses were on order. Once the material arrives the framing-in will start and evidently that goes very fast. He said, "soon it will look like a house!" Cool. :)

This meant I had to make a decision on what color shingles were going to go on the roof. I took Friday off as a little minivacation, so Mom and I went down to the contractor's office and looked at samples of shingles and siding. We were torn between a color called "weathered white" and another color called "pewter". The weathered white looked like its name, while the pewter looked like a nice medium gray. I was leaning toward the pewter color because it would make a very lovely contrast with the pale siding we wanted. The very nice lady in charge of the office said there were two homes the contractor had just re-roofed, one with each color, so we could go and see how it looked in daylight. I got the addresses, printed out maps from Google maps, and then Mom and I went on a little drive around the area to find the homes. It turned out it was time well spent, the weathered white colored shingles actually look like a soft silver gray in daylight, which is a color I really like and so did Mom. The pewter shingles looked almost black -- very handsome -- but in this climate in the full sun they would really retain the heat. So we decided on the weathered white shingles and a siding color called "Pearl", which is a very pale warm gray close to what I have on the house already.

The concrete is now hard as... well, concrete. I've been walking over it as I drag the hose and sprinkler from one end of the yard to the other in an attempt to keep the lawn alive. Summer is here with a vengeance -- it has been 105-107 degrees F the past few days, ugh. Looks like the weather may moderate toward the end of the week, but is IS July, and that means hot. This probably means the various builders may be showing up very early in the morning to beat the heat. Guess I should get to bed before 1 am, huh?

Here are two photos from last week.

The concrete slab all nice and set up. This is before a bunch of birds decided to poop on it after eating wild cherries. :P

The back of the house as it looks right now. The exposed wall doesn't look terribly nice, but it is holding up well despite the vagaries of the weather. As of this moment it is wind storming outside and there were big thunderheads on the horizon before the sun went down. Maybe if we are lucky we'll get a little free water out of the deal, but this time of year we are just as likely to get a dust storm rather than a rain shower.

The concrete folks very nicely strung the hose from the old washer faucet and nailed it up along the side of the house to keep it out of the setting concrete. Someone also turned on the exterior faucet on the front of my house which was a really big help since I'm now using that to run all my sprinklers. At some point, the plumber is going to replace all that old piping and life may get a little bit easier in terms of the water supply.

After a >very< warm and muggy day, we've been getting thundershowers and some really spectacular cloud-to-cloud lightning. Not much rain, yet. Too warm to do much outside, but I managed a mild sunburn while cleaning moss and gutters this weekend. Thankfully nothing like your heat; Dawn's up in Victoria this weekend and it's hot there, too.

Hope the contractor got the roof trusses spec'ed correctly. Bother-in-law had a problem with that and they had to "make it fit".

Strawberry freezer jam sounds good...

We're supposed to get more T-storms tonight. We've already got multiple range fires thanks to last night's lightning. Argh. Smoke AND heat are not much fun.

Our contractor has done a lot of work, so I have hopes it'll all come together nicely. So far, so good. :)

Anything frozen sounds good! I had some chocolate ice cream after dinner. :)

The roof tiles sound pretty.

What have you been doing about the cats?

I'm hoping they will look good in this climate.

The cats have been coping better than me, for the most part. They lie low when it gets noisy, then troop out to inspect the work when the contractors leave. They don't worry about things like leaks or electrical problems. :)

The hot weather has made for melted cats. I make sure they have plenty of water and they seem to be doing OK.

Don't you love it when a plan comes together? :) The colors you chose sound lovely, as well as nice and cool for summer. Would you post swatches or pics so we can see?

I hear you about the heat. Just got back from two weeks in Sacramento with Meg, and oy! We had fun... as long as we stayed inside. Not only did it hit 100+ degrees, the river makes it humid. I'm all for staying up late in summer, it's cooler at night!

Yay for plans that work! Or seem to. XD

I took more pics today, I'll try and post samples of the color scheme when I can get my hands on the swatches again.

It's too bloody HOT!! And the range fires are burning. Ugh. *cough* I hope you're in a no-fire zone.

Bird poop aside, sounds like it's going well, and the roof tiles sound neat. :)

So far, so good! More "weather" on the way - maybe thunder and lightning, maybe wind, maybe dust... take your pick. Bleh. But the framing started today!!

Wasn't framing another high point on that mood chart? ;-) I agree that part is exciting. The weather seems to be exciting nationwide. I'm hoping my neck of the woods doesn't get any more exciting than the afternoon thunderstorms typical of this time of year. Though it appears lightning fried my phone system last week.

I think it was high on the mood chart! :D

Did you get your phone system fixed? It's a pain without the little techie-stuff we use daily.

I haven't gotten it addressed yet. I'm not sure if it's the phone line that got fried or the phones themselves. I've been able to get an older, non-digital phone to ring, but everything seems intermittent. A project for the weekend!

The weathered white shingles sound lovely. I remember how it was when I was choosing the brick for Himring; it's amazing how different something looks when it's actually on a house. The small samples you see in a showroom just don't wrk when it comes to seeing how the finished installation will appear!

Can't the countractor cover the exposed walls with some tarp or plastic or something, to protect them a bit better until the new exterior walls are done?

It seems like viewing things in full daylight changes their color quite a bit. Also viewing them at the proper perspective and distance also shifts the color, it's kind of strange that way.

What color brick did you choose for your house?

The contractors are working like beavers to cover the exposed walls, mainly by finishing the framing in. The walls will eventually be faced and covered with drywall as interior rooms. even though it has rained a couple times since the project began, it is so dry here the walls haven't gotten damp at all.

Himring's brick is a multi-color reddish orange/tan/pale cream combination. I wasn't all that impressed with it at the brickyard, but my opinion changed radically when I saw it on a couple of actual houses!
