Foundation -- All In A Day's Work
Here we go, the highlights of the day's work by the concrete crew.

This is how the forms looked as of yesterday - they added insulating foam and rebar to the dug footings. Turns out the city had made some changes to how they wanted footings prepped, so the guys worked like beavers to get everything ready.

We started off bright and early at 6 a.m. when the crew showed up in pickup trucks. About 15 minutes later, the concrete pumper truck arrived and set itself up. They parked diagonally in the middle of the street and pretty much blocked the entire road. Fortunately you can get around the block without major problems.

Once the machine had set up, it snaked a long multi-jointed boom around the tree and over the roof of the house into the back where the footings had been prepped.

Another view of the pumper boom and pipe. The pipe isn't that huge, so I'm assuming the weight of the flowing concrete isn't too bad.

And here is what was waiting when I got home from work -- a tidy slab with the new plumbing and fasteners sticking out. Wow. I had asked the guys if it needed to be wrapped or kept wet and they said "nope".

Now we wait for it to finish setting. I'm just amazed at what technology and the right machinery can do -- and how fast! The thought of a usable room on a level with the rest of the house tickles me greatly. :D

It looks great!! Too bad you couldn't do a video of the whole day with a hidden camera.

That would have been cool, alas I'm not set up with a CCD yet. Done in fast-forward it would have been really neat to see.

How exciting for you! It looks like they really know what their doing too, which is alway a plus :D

I can't wait to see the finished product - and I bet you can't either!

Having new living-space will be so cool. It's weird, I've been planning it on paper for months now, but seeing it come to life for real is just amazing.

The only thing more amazing than the extra space will be how quickly it fills up. :/ How will the new roof join with the existing roof? Hopefully there will be a fair bit of additional attic space.

Strawberries are IN, but the crop yield this year looks to be about half of what I picked in the previous two years--still plenty to eat and have a bit to freeze. 'Bout time, too; it's summer come a day early.

I'm still working on thinning out my collection of stuff -- mom and I get to blend households, so that makes for fun. Fortunately, her furniture is way nicer than what I've gotten over the years, so much of it can go to Goodwill. :)

Strawberries!! Got a half-flat today so I could make some jam or sauce. Yum.

I certainly am. Having new space with a level floor that doesn't make you feel as if you're walking through the fun house will be wonderful. Having a laundry room and pantry were we can tuck the cats litter boxes and keep everything clean will make all the residents of this home quite happy.

I bet that was cool to watch. Plus there's something satisfying about seeing a nice, new bit of construction going up.

It was wonderful to see, and let me draw a nice full breath of relief that they were finally here in the correct order to pour concrete.

Having a mixer show up the day before when things were not ready was a tad worrying.

And some kind soul turned on the water that supplies the exterior spigot on the house so I could start watering my lawn. Were into the dry part of summer and my lawn went from spring green to parched in less than a week without irrigation. So now I get to drag hoses and sprinklers around the house for a while.

Great to see it under progress! Your builders are doing a great job, must be good to finally see it underway. :)

It's a relief to see the new structure starting to come into reality. It was hard to imagine it being done with the house torn apart and a big gravelly trench dug around the perimeter.

Cool! Right now it looks like a giant patio - but that will change soon!

Yes it does look like a giant patio, doesn't it? I've been walking on it this week, which is a weird feeling, knowing it is going to be "interior space" eventually. :)

Maybe you should buy some indoor-outdoor wicker furniture for it? Then it can be an outdoor patio now, and an indoor "patio" later! :D

Actually, my mom has some wonderful patio furniture that is going to be coming over here when she moves in. That's a great idea. :-)

I leave my LJ alone for a while and it explodes! Friends come back and start posting again! *hugs* (I need to post, come to think of it.)

Wow, your house is having an extreme makeover! It would be interesting to see a proper foundation being poured... that's one thing my parents didn't do to our house. (Although one room could use it.) What are you planning to do with the addition?

Hope the kitties are coping okay with all the construction noise!

We been busy, for sure! Welcome back, hope you've been having a wonderful summer.

Extreme makeover is right -- the place deserves a little TLC -- and a second bathroom. :D

The addition will contain a 2nd bath (to ADA-code, yay!), an office for me, a laundry room/pantry, and a generous family room where we can eat and game and watch TV.

The kitties have taken things really well, considering the noisy parts of the work. They watch with interest, and the outdoor group pretty much walk on everything the minute the work crew leaves.

Congratulations!

Yeah, level floors are nice. So are level yards. The resident mole has made such a mess of the area around the outdoor clothesline that I fear trying to use it anymore. (Yay for indoor portable clotheslines!)

I've signed with a temp agency, among other applications. Hope something comes of it. As for the automated application that terminated me early, I e-mailed the company and got a nice e-mail back about my suggestions for improving their program.

Thank you. It is coming along. :)

Level floors and yards are good -- my back yard is not terribly level, something I'll have to improve for both mom and my sake. The mole runs can be tromped on to level them out - the mole is long gone.

Good luck with the agency!! <3
