House Remodel - Footings
Photos taken early this morning -- the start of the footings for the new foundation.

You can clearly see the pad where the old shed used to be.

The boarded-up windows were lost when the original porch was put in. Assuming I designed things correctly, the addition will add light to the living areas by doors with glass panels to conduct light from the new family room into the kitchen. We'll see how that works out. My parent's house, while much newer and more modern, had no windows on the sides of the structure, only on the front and back. Granted, they were big windows, but if it wasn't for side windows, my place would be much darker than it is. I've got excellent light in every room but the kitchen, which lost a window over the sink back in some remodeling job done before I bought the place. So in my design all doors into the kitchen area have windows to let whatever ambient light there is pass through.

The backhoe guy returns tomorrow. And I have to call the plumber to fix the commode, which has worn internal workings and is starting to constantly run. I did install a temporary light in the kitchen to augment the old one which is running half-lit. I think the shaking damaged the old thing. Replacing it will be a job for the electrician.

Oh yeah, it is wind-storming a bit right now. 0_o

That's a good sized yard. And you say you want to add a garage eventually?

Looks like it's going to be a neat addition. Good thing you factored in natural light. I hate dark and windowless spaces.

It's a decent-sized city lot, I didn't remember the exact dimensions of the lot, but digging through my paperwork, I found the appraisal packet from '92 when I bought the place. The lot is kind of pie-shaped, with a road frontage of 96 feet, sides about 120 feet and back about 62 feet with a utility easement at the back of 20 feet. I'll post a cleaned-up sketch of the site tomorrow. The addition will push another 16 feet into the yard, and the garage can't be attached to the house due to city regulations, so it would need to be sited behind the house (but could be placed almost to the edge of the lot, which is what my neighbor has with her garage. It would leave a rather modest back yard, but that's actually OK, given I don't mow lawns. :)

My current bathroom has no window (another casualty of the old porch), which I really don't like. The new bathroom *will* have a window, yay!!

Thanks! So far, so good! They got the footings dug today and the area leveled, which I think means the concrete folks can start building forms for the foundation.
